18 Innings Of Fury

Normally, unless I was off work the next day or my Cubbies were playing, I wouldn’t be CAUGHT DEAD watching an entire 18-inning baseball game. Hell, unless it was the back-half of the season, I might just say “sayonara” to a Cubs game going that long as well.

But last night, all I wanted to do was crack open a beer and watch a sporting event after a LONG closing shift. And since the Dodgers and Red Sox are playing for the title, I wanted to partake in a little baseball action.

Thankfully, I was able to make it home for the start of the ninth inning. I needed some kind of excitement to fill the night I was having. And, lo and behold, it did. The excitement of “free baseball” during a championship series has the ability to turn any frown upside down.

But when it goes 18 innings, and you have to work in the morning…….that’s another story.

The last moment of the game I remember was Justin Turner flying out to right in the fourteenth to end the inning. When that happened; I looked at the clock, then at the scoreboard, then back at the clock, and said; “F**K, will this game ever end?” I couldn’t believe I would ever say that about a baseball game; it just wasn’t like me. But when that seven o’clock alarm is awaiting you in just a few short hours, you kind of second guess your priorities in life.

Sadly enough, I couldn’t make it through all 18 innings. It was such a classic, but my eyes and body just couldn’t withstand the hour in which it was. But thankfully, I was able to see the end of the game through the highlights sent to my phone. A BEAUTIFUL solo-shot by Max Muncy helped solidify a Game 3 victory for the Dodgers, and cut the lead to 2-1 against the Boston Red Sox.

Hopefully, the rest of this series doesn’t end up being like this. I would like to be able to see the end in real time, and not have to resort to highlights the following day. Even though an extra inning thriller is something special in a monumental situation like that, sometimes we just need to GET TO THE POINT!
